It was another great weekend of high energy hockey on the Lower North Shore during the 4th annual St. Paul's River Winter Classic February 14th to the 16th in St. Paul's. Teams and their fans came from L'anse au Loup to Pakuashipi for outdoor hockey action and were not disappointed to say the least. A fun tournament was organized by the St. Paul's Recreation Committee and countless volunteers from the area. In total, 7 teams particiapted. From Pool A: The hometown Bonne-Esperance Kings, the L'anse au Loup Wolves and the Blanc-Sablon Chiefs. From Pool B: Blanc-Sablon Storm, Pakuashipi Geese, Bonne-Esperance North Stars and the St. Augustine Devils. The temperatures this past weekend tested the true grit of the hockey players, evening temperatures were well below -20 C with the windchill, but that did not stop the heat on the ice. Everyone played well, but in the end the B Banner went home with the hometown Bonne-Esperance Kings who defeated the Pakuashipi Geese 5-0. The Blanc-Sablon Storm left victorious with the A Banner against the St. Augustine Devils with a final score of 5-1. Congratulations to all teams that had participated as well as to the St. Paul's Recreation Committee for hosting another successful event bringing back another year of hockey excitement to Bonne-Esperance! The hockey action continues this weekend in La Tabatiere on February 20th, 21st and 22nd. Abbygail Wellman CFBS Journalist |
